The Highway Puppet Theater hits the road to perform puppet shows at birthday parties, festivals and events all over the greater Pittsburgh area. All shows listed below are performed with live voices, use handmade puppets, last thirty minutes, and are appropriate for ages 3+.

  • Cinderella
    The HPT’s Cinderella features a shy girl who grows into a spunky princess. Cinderella, a girl who gets teased for loving to play in the dirt, learns from her friendly fairy godmother to stick up for herself against her bullying family and teasing neighbors. A fun tale for aspiring royals of all ages.

    The show is performed with handmade puppets and props and live voices. Live voice means the puppets can call the birthday boy or girl by name, refer to the name of your organization or customize the performance in other ways.

    HPT Cinderella Party Ideas
    Princess Party: Make custom tiaras using sequins, rhinestones and fun craft supplies. Decorate a gingerbread house as a castle for a uniquely elegant birthday cake.
    Tea Party: Decorate tea cups fit for a princess, serve petit fours, scones and a full tea service with sugar cubes and kid-sized cream pitchers.
    Mud Pie Party: Have fun playing in the dirt and cinders, just like Cinderella! Encourage outdoor exploration and interest in environmental science by making mud pies, serving a worms and dirt birthday cake, and painting terra cotta pots to plant a flower in.

  • Jack and the Beanstalk
    The Highway Puppet Theater’s Jack and the Beanstalk is a magical tale of a wise-cracking boy with big dreams, and too much pride.  Hold onto your hats as he learns that his brains and heart are more useful than his brawn against a big giant.  Also available as Jane and the Beanstalk.

    HPT Jack and the Beanstalk Party Ideas
    Magic Party: Use food coloring, cornstarch and all matter of magical ingredients to mix your own magic potions, just like Jack.  Wear wizard robes, make magic wands, and don’t forget trick “magic” re-lighting candles for the birthday cake!

    Planting Party: Most gardeners may not be able to grow beanstalks all the way to the sky, but that doesn’t make growing a plant any less magical. Dig in the dirt, paint terra cotta pots and plant your own seeds to take home and water.  Who knows?  You might find your own magic world.

    Castle Party: Live the life of the most royal giant, if only for a party.  Make crowns, tiaras and scepters; write official proclamations and decorate a jungle gym as a castle.  Don’t forget the edible glitter on her majesty’s cake.

  • The Ugly Duckling
    The Highway Puppet Theater’s Ugly Duckling tells the tale of a rejected baby bird who must leave home and explore the wide world of animals to find happiness and fun.  Perfect for animal lovers.

    HPT Ugly Duckling Party Ideas

    Wild Kingdom Party: Decorate animal masks, play pin the tail on the donkey and take a bite out of a zoo-themed cake covered with animal figurines.

    Party in a Park: Venture near the Duckling’s natural habitat: a park!  After an outdoor puppet show, take in the wildlife all around, have a water fight worthy of a happy swan’s splashing and eat some tasty food fresh off the grill.

    Just Ducky Party: Explore the world of the Ugly Duckling’s brothers and sisters.  Pass out duck-quack whistles and decorate bath-time rubber duckies.  Make wear-able duck bills and wings and quack to a Five Little Ducks singalong.  Top it all off with a pond-themed birthday cake complete with a duckie centerpiece.

  • Hansel and Gretel
    The Highway Puppet Theater’s Hansel and Gretel tells the tale of a cheerful, talkative sister and her loyal, quiet brother’s journey from home to danger to home again. Witch can be made more or less scary depending on the age of the audience.

    HPT Hansel and Gretel Party Ideas:
    Scavenger Hunt Party: Think following bread crumbs and pebbles sounds like fun?  Why not try following a trail of clues around a party site to find the  ”home” prize.  Answer riddles to get a to a birthday cake, or solve puzzles on your way to goody bags or a pinata.  Just don’t fall for any witch’s tricks on the way!

    Sweet-Tooth Party: Take a hint from the witch and explore the fun, creative world of baking and candymaking. Decorate cookies, cupcakes, and even a gingerbread house with sweets galore. Make molded chocolates, hand-dipped lollipops and whatever else your sweet tooth imagines.

    Forest Explorer Party: What does it take to navigate through a a forest like Hansel and Gretel?  Pass out compasses, magnifying glasses, canteens and trail mix before taking a hike through a real forest.  Or even make the puppet show a kick-off to an overnight camping trip (in tents not candy houses!).

  • Goldilocks and the Three Bears
    The Highway Puppet Theater’s Goldilocks and the Three Bears tells the story of how a curious little girl became friends with a family of bears.  Perfect for Teddybear lovers.  Can also be performed with a boy main character.

    Goldilocks Party Ideas

    Teddybear Picnic: Just as the song says, every party guest can bring his or her Teddybear to an outdoor picnic. Following the puppet show, children and toys alike can partake of a full picnic spread.

    Make your Own Teddybear: Limited by nothing but craft supplies and imagination, every guest can decorate or even create his/her very own teddy bear drawing, hand puppet or even stuff animal to take home.  No trips to bear houses required!

    Goldilocks Adventure: Just as Goldilocks was brave enough to venture into the unknown, party guests can venture into a sensory adventure.  How do things taste, sound and feel when you are blindfolded?  Is it too hot?  Too cold?  Too soft?  Or jusssstt right?
